Page 16, Hugh de Strode, Kt. 16 Edw. II released to John Chickley and heirs lands in Rigge, saving 8s. 2d. rent; and also, the same year, demised lands in Bowdon in the Ford, and knighton, co. Wilts, rendering, for nine years, 10s. rent. and after nine years 60s. rent. 17 Edw. II, he granted to Henry Strode, his son, the said yearly rents of 10s. and 60s. and the reversion of said lands; and also a reversion of eight marks, which Gilbert Lovel paid him, and the rents and reversion of the lands. Dated at Hewstock.
This Hugh is not styled of Chalmington in the old deeds referred to in the above note, which are dated at Hewstock, which was probably at that time his place of residence. The ancient chief places of residence of the strode family were at Strode and Hewstock, till Richard Strode, in the reign of Henry VI, settled at Parnham. Occasionally they resided at Chalmington; and also at Chantmarle after that Sir John Strode, who purchased Chantmarle, and rebuilt the house there, had succeeded to the family mansion at Parnham.
